Commercial Aviation in Vietnam
Boeing’s Commercial Market Outlook (CMO) forecasts significant growth in air traffic and airplane fleets across Southeast Asia through 2043. As Southeast Asia’s largest air travel market, here’s what that means for Vietnam:
- With passenger air traffic in Southeast Asia projected to grow more than 7% annually, Vietnam remains central to this growth with annual expansion of over 8% ─ the highest rate across the region.
- Air traffic in Vietnam is expected to double over the next 10 years, growing to more than 75 million annual passengers.
- New airplanes will deliver an immediate boost for the country’s connectivity and economic growth. Airlines across Southeast Asia will need 4,720 new airplanes over 20 years, with single-aisle jets comprising 80% of projected deliveries.
- The 737 MAX is well-suited to develop fast-growing domestic and regional markets such as Can Tho, Hue, Haiphong, Dalat, Phu Quoc and Nha Trang. The versatile and efficient 737 MAX family provides operators with greater flexibility and profitability across their networks, while reducing fuel use and carbon emissions by up to 20% compared to the airplanes it replaces.
- To meet long-haul demand, widebodies like the 787 Dreamliner and 777X will make up one in five deliveries in Southeast Asia over the next 20 years. Capable of connecting Vietnam to Europe and North America, the super-efficient 787 Dreamliner family enables airlines to profitably open new routes to fly people directly where they’d like to go in exceptional comfort.
- The wider Asia Pacific region will account for approximately one-third of global freighter deliveries through 2043. In particular, Southeast Asia is projected to need more than 120 new and converted freighters in that timeframe.
- As the market leader in freighter airplanes, Boeing provides more than 90% of the worldwide dedicated freighter capacity, including new production and converted airplanes. The 777-8 Freighter will be the world’s largest, most capable and most fuel-efficient twin-engine freighter ─ offering the highest payload and lowest fuel use, emissions and operating cost per tonne of any large freighter.
- The projected rise in airplane demand will also increase the need for aviation industry talent – pilots, engineers and ground personnel – creating jobs in Vietnam and the Southeast Asia region. Southeast Asia operators are expected to need to hire and train 234,000 new pilots, maintenance technicians and cabin crew – more than tripling the region’s active personnel.
